Scholarship Description: Applications are invited to pursue PhD research in close colloboration with a major research programme on the Long Term Dynamics of Interdependent Infrastructure Systems being undertaken by the UK Infrastructure Transitions research Consortium (IRTC) funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The aim of the ITRC is to develop and demonstrate a new generation of system simulation models and tools to inform analysis, planning and design of national infrastructure. The programme has high level backing from a range of stakeholders in government and industry. The focus of the PhD Studentship is to use new economic concepts derived from evolutionary economics to understand more about the inter-relationships between different levels of infrastructure provision and the longer term development of local economies. In particular, the research will focus on how the long-run evolution of infrastructure then shapes and reshapes the geography of economic development. The work will be supervised by Professor Peter Tyler (Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge) and Professor Ron Martin (Department of Geography, University of Cambridge).

Scholarship Description: ACLS invites applications for the fourth annual competition for the ACLS Collaborative Research Fellowships for collaborative research in the humanities and related social sciences. The program is supported by a generous grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Objectives The aim of this fellowship program is to offer small teams of two or more scholars the opportunity to collaborate intensively on a single, substantive project. The fellowship supports projects that aim to produce a tangible research product (such as joint print or web publications) for which two or more collaborators will take credit. The fellowships are for a total period of up to 24 months, to be initiated between July 1, 2012 and September 1, 2014, and provide salary replacement for each collaborator (based on academic rank: up to $35,000 for Assistant Professor; up to $40,000 for Associate Professor; and up to $60,000 for full Professor) as well as up to $20,000 in collaboration funds (which may be used for such purposes as travel, materials, or research assistance). The amount of the ACLS fellowship for any collaborative project will vary depending on the number of collaborators, their academic rank, and the duration of the research leave, but will not exceed $140,000 for any one project. Collaborations need not be interdisciplinary or inter-institutional. Applicants at the same institution, however, must demonstrate why local funding is insufficient to support the project. Collaborations that involve the participation of assistant and associate faculty members are particularly encouraged. Up to seven awards will be made in the 2011-12 competition.

Scholarship Description: This PhD fellowship is available at the Department of Environmental Engineering , and its main objective is set to Modelling the Fate and Optimizing the Removal of Selected Xenobiotic Organic Micro-Pollutants from Point and Network Water Sources. The selection and development of, for instance, antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment is one of the greatest concerns with regard to the use of antimicrobials – a potential threat to public health. The outcome of this project contributes (i) to improve the assessment of the expected environmental impact, (ii) assist the regional decision making process to optimize pollution control; (iii) develop robust control strategies, including advanced chemical processes combined with biological systems. The high number of pharmaceuticals and the wide variety of biodegradation and speciation processes characteristic to these compounds require the development of a modelling framework – an aim that this fellowship advocates.

Eligibility:
All applicants must have had their doctoral theses successfully examined, normally within the past four years, or be able to demonstrate that the final examination will be completed by the end of February, i.e. before the Centre’s Advisory Council meets in March. The Paul Mellon Centre reserves the right to withdraw a Postdoctoral Fellowship from a candidate to whom one has been offered on the latter basis, should the examination result in substantive referral or in failure.

Scholarship Description: To support scholarship in the field of British art and architectural history and to disseminate knowledge through publications, exhibitions and education, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art offers a variety of fellowships and grants. The Centre’s remit does not cover contemporary fine arts, archaeology, the current practice of architecture or the performing arts. Postdoctoral Fellowships are offered to enable the Fellow to transform doctoral research in the field of British art or architectural history into publishable form, such as a book, series of articles or exhibition catalogue. Alternatively, the fellowship may support new research arising out of a successfully submitted doctoral dissertation where that research may lead readily to publication.
