Scholarship Description: Skeletal muscle originates from the somites, which are segmental structures in the early vertebrate embryo which give rise to multiple cell lineages including skeleton, connective tissue and blood vessels. Our laboratory investigates somite development using the chicken embryo as a model system, and applies modern embryological techniques including microsurgery, in vivo electroporation and retroviral gene transfer to study cellular and molecular mechanisms during early and intermediate stages of muscle development. We seek a highly motivated PhD student to be funded by the Graduate School GRK1104 (From cells to organs: Molecular mechanisms of organogenesis). The fellowship can be granted for maximum three years.
